AV System Assistance

I've been on the hunt for older Japanese A/V technology. I've returned to the notion that I'll start collecting DVDs to play during my down hours. While I've done some preliminary research for players that might be able to handle the simple function of playing DVDs (and the occasional blu-ray) with robust build quality, I would like some feedback on what is needed for a complete system.
My current set-up includes a simple childhood PlayStation 2 slim (model no: SCPH-77001) attached to my first personal TV - a 2009 Sony Bravia (model no: KDL-32L5000). The issue with the PS2 slim is it being unable to play certain DVDs or game discs due to the lid not reading as fully closed. This is common, but leads to the occasional scratching of the disc. Some discs also don't appear to sit flat in the disc tray despite not being bent. I do enjoy that I could theoretically watch DVDs and play old games, but this player ain't cutting if it's issue-prone and damaging discs. Thus, I'm considering buying a dedicated DVD/BD player and separate game system.
My goals for the system are:
- High build quality; bullet-proof and repairable with replacement parts availability
- DVD and blu-ray capable
- PS2 compatibility; nostalgia begs that I be able to play my old favorites
Through some light research, Pioneer turned up some good late-90s/early 00s technology built like a tank in Japan. The first is the oldest with the two latter options being turn-of-the-century benchmark equipment that still catches a hefty price on eBay.As follows:
- Pioneer DVD-v7400
- Pioneer Elite DV-09
- Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD
Opinions on any of these? Any robust Japanese-players from this era to add? What other equipment is needed to optimize a player like one of the above listed? I really don't have much knowledge of audio and visual systems.
